New Delhi: The government on Thursday dismissed claims that India’s satellite communication regulatory framework's unfair or biased. It said all three licensed Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite (GMPCS) operators are at a stage in the approval process.
The statement came after a social media post raised questions about whether the regulatory rules were being applied in a way. The government stressed that its authorisation system treats all telecommunications services equally including satellite communication.
Three GMPCS operators that use geosynchronous satellite systems have already been given licences to provide satellite communication services in India. As part of their licence terms each operator must meet security requirements before moving forward.
Now security assessments are being carried out for all three operators. These assessments are meant to ensure that user data and privacy are protected. No operator can apply for spectrum allocation until these security checks are completed.
The government said the fact that all three operators are, in the same position shows that any claims of unfair or discriminatory treatment are "baseless and misconceived".
