New Delhi: GAIL (India) Limited has commissioned a 1.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) manufacturing plant at the Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ) in Karnataka through its wholly owned subsidiary, GAIL Mangalore Petrochemicals Limited (GMPL).
Plant Revived After Acquisition Through Insolvency Process
The commissioning follows an extensive revival and refurbishment exercise undertaken by GAIL after it acquired the plant's original owner, JBF Petrochemicals Limited (JBPL), through the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) in 2023. The acquisition was completed under a resolution plan approved by the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
Following the acquisition, GAIL undertook work to restore the facility, addressing engineering, technological and operational challenges before bringing it into operation.
Boost to Domestic PTA Manufacturing
The commissioning marks a step in GAIL's expansion in the downstream petrochemical sector. With an installed capacity of 1.25 MTPA, the plant is expected to add to India's domestic PTA manufacturing capacity, improve the availability of this key industrial raw material and reduce dependence on imports.
PTA is a major raw material used to manufacture polyester fibre, yarn, PET resin and other polyester-based products. These materials are widely used in the textile, apparel and packaging industries.
Plant to Market Products Under 'G-Tex' Brand
Located near New Mangalore Port, the facility has dedicated logistics infrastructure to support the movement of raw materials and finished products.
GAIL will market the PTA produced at the plant under the brand name 'G-Tex', using its existing marketing network and customer base.
