New Delhi: India’s coir exports have increased by 305.70% in the last 10 years, rising from Rs 1,630.33 crore in FY 2014-15 to Rs 6,614.40 crore in FY 2025-26, according to the Ministry of MSME.
India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of coir and coir products, accounting for around two-thirds of global production. The industry has a turnover of approximately Rs 16,000 crore.
According to the ministry, more than 21,000 coir units are registered on the Udyam portal, employing around 2.3 lakh people. The sector provides direct and indirect employment to over 7 lakh workers, around 80% of whom are women from rural households.
The US, China, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK are among the major export destinations for Indian coir products. Coir pith, fibre, yarn and tufted mats are among the key products exported from the country.
The Ministry of MSME runs the Coir Vikas Yojana (CVY) to support the industry through skill training, technological development and promotion of domestic and international sales.
Over 68,000 people have received training under various programmes, with women accounting for more than 80% of those trained. The government has also supported the development of more than 150 machines, technologies, and value-added products.
Key Note
The growth of the coir sector has also opened up opportunities for rural entrepreneurs, particularly women. With support through training programmes and government schemes such as PMEGP, several entrepreneurs have established their own units, creating jobs and expanding the use of coir-based products in domestic and international markets.
