New Delhi: Indian customs authorities and the Port of Rotterdam are working on ways to digitalise processes in India to speed up cargo movement and reduce ship turnaround times, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Sunday.
Goyal made the remarks after visiting the Port of Rotterdam and meeting its CEO, Boudewijn Siemons. He said the collaboration would focus on adopting modern standards and improving the movement of cargo through Indian ports.
“Despite doubling our port capacity over the past decade, India still needs more capacity. By 2047, we expect port capacity to double twice over the next two decades to support GDP growth and international trade,” Goyal said.
Digitalisation to Improve Port Operations
The proposed cooperation between Indian customs authorities and Rotterdam port authorities aims to improve cargo evacuation and make ship operations more efficient.
Goyal said digital systems could help bring Indian port processes closer to modern international standards, reducing delays and improving the use of existing infrastructure.
India Targets Major Expansion in Port Capacity
The minister said further investment in port capacity would be necessary to support India's economic growth and rising international trade. Although capacity has expanded over the past decade, demand is expected to require another major increase by 2047.
The Port of Rotterdam, Europe's largest port, serves as a major gateway for goods entering European markets and plays a key role in global supply chains.
India-EU FTA Expected to Open Trade Opportunities
Goyal said the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement would create significant opportunities for businesses on both sides. He noted that the Netherlands' port infrastructure and logistics connectivity could help Indian exporters reach European markets.
The minister also addressed members of the Indian community in Amsterdam, encouraging professionals and academics to collaborate with Indian institutions and mentor start-ups.
Speaking about young people, Goyal stressed the importance of responsibility and engagement, urging members of the diaspora to contribute to India's development through their professional experience and connections.
