
New Delhi: Adani Power Limited (APL) and Bhutan’s state owned Druk Green Power Corp Ltd (DGPC) signed a Shareholders Agreement (SHA) for the construction of the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydropower Project in Bhutan.
According to the SHA signed on 5 October 2026 APL and DGPC will together incorporate a public company in Bhutan with a 49:51 shareholdership (APL:DGPC) to develop the project.
The construction of the project will commence in the first half of 2027 and the completion is expected within six years of groundbreaking.
The project is included in the 5,000 MW hydropower development partnership between the Adani Group and the Royal Government of Bhutan. The project follows the earlier 570 MW
Wangchhu Hydroelectric project agreement which was signed in September 2025.
Managing Director, Adani Power Ltd.,Anil Sardana said, “Hydropower will play a pivotal role in accelerating South Asia’s energy transition, and this project will contribute significantly to enhancing energy security, reducing carbon intensity, and advancing shared sustainability goals. While the project is expected to help meet Bhutan’s peak winter electricity requirements, it will also enable the export of surplus green power to India during the summer months, creating long-term value for both nations, ”
While his Bhutanese counterpart, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin stated that the project will strengthen Bhutan’s energy security in the winters and will enable surplus clean energy to India.
